Nine Reasons We’re Moving to Portugal
When people hear we’re moving to Portugal, the reactions usually fall into two camps. Some assume we’re “escaping” the U.S. Others are simply curious: Why Portugal?
The truth is, after 28+ years of federal service — first in the Army, then as a civilian with the Department of Veterans Affairs — I’ve had the privilege of living or traveling in and across nearly every corner of America and its territories. I love my country. My wife, meanwhile, always saw America as a place of opportunity and it still is. She’s taken advantage of that, and she’s also given back as a Public Health Employee. But no place is perfect, and for us, Portugal offers a combination of opportunities that make sense at this stage of life.
This isn’t about running away from America. It’s about running toward something that feels right for our lifestyle, and our values.
Our Nine Reasons
Here’s what drew us to Portugal:
Closer to Family. We’ll be just a $40 flight or ferry ride away from my wife’s childhood home in Martil, Morocco and a large extended family.
Lower Cost of Living. Nearly 40% lower than where we live in the U.S., which makes our retirement savings stretch further.
Walkability and Accessibility. Everyday destinations — from grocery stores to parks — are easier to reach on foot.
Senior-Friendly Services. Portugal supports its elderly citizens, including free public transportation for seniors.
Multi-Generational Culture. Families gather together in plazas, parks, and cafés in ways that feel natural and integrated.
Affordable Travel Across Europe. Trains, buses, ferries, and inexpensive flights connect us to new countries and experiences.
Healthcare That Works. Quality care that doesn’t break the bank, a huge relief as we move into retirement.
Stronger Food & Safety Standards. Europe’s stringent regulations around food and chemicals give us peace of mind.
Simple Joys. Yes, there’s also the romance of sipping coffee in a café and enjoying a warm pastel de nata.
More Than a List
But beyond the bullet points, this move is about something deeper. It’s about adventure. It’s about living in a place where we can travel widely, walk daily, and savor both small pleasures and big connections. It’s about making family more accessible, embedding ourselves in a culture that values all generations, and living more intentionally in a way that feels sustainable.
If America could also give me affordable healthcare, inexpensive travel, high food standards, a lower cost of living, and more robust services for seniors — then maybe I’d never leave. But it doesn’t. And that’s okay. I’ve served my country, I’m proud of it, and I carry that with me wherever I go.
This move isn’t rejection. It’s renewal.
For us, Portugal represents not just a new chapter, but the kind of chapter you dream about — filled with travel, community, family, and the joy of discovering what’s around the corner.
That’s why we’re moving to Portugal.
